ROBERT C. BYRD HONORS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Purpose

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program is a federally funded program. The purpose of the program is to promote student excellence and achievement, and to recognize exceptionally able students who show promise of continued excellence.

Description

This year the U. S. Department of Education has awarded 118 scholarships to the State of Maryland. The amount of the scholarship changes each year, however, it has ranged from $1,000-$1,500. This amount is determined by the U.S. Department of Education and the amount received by the students is based on the total cost of attendance at each institution of higher education. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit for each scholar's four years of study at an institution of higher education in any state.

Requirements for the Scholarship

The Byrd Scholarship information and nomination forms are sent to each public and non-public high school principal and headmaster in March of each year. At that time, students in the top 1% of the graduating class for that particular year may be nominated by the principal or headmaster. In addition to being in the top 1% of the class, the students nominated must graduate by June 30 of that year, be admitted to an institution of higher education (excluding U.S. Military Academies) as a full-time student, and be a Maryland resident. Once all the nomination forms have been received, a limited number of scholars are selected through a random selection process.

If you are interested or have any questions concerning the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program, please contact your principal, headmaster or the School and Community Outreach Office at 1-888-246-0016, or 410-767-0484.
