Two Ways Adults Can Earn a Maryland High School Diploma

In Maryland there are two ways an adult who has dropped out of school may earn a high school diploma.

Graduation CapCompletion of the Maryland Adult External Diploma Program (EDP)

This program is for individuals, ages 18 years and older, who are not enrolled in regular high school and can demonstrate essential academic competencies and life skills. Academic skill areas include: reading, writing, mathematics, oral communication, and critical thinking. Life skills relate to occupational, self, social, aesthetic, consumer, and scientific awareness. This is not a class attendance-based program. Participants are expected to meet periodically with an assessor to develop a portfolio which proves they have the skills required to be awarded a Maryland High School Diploma. For further information, call 410-767-0334. More About The External Diploma Program (EDP)

Eligibility to take the GED Tests requires that an individual be at least 16 years old; not a high school graduate; has been a Maryland resident for at least three months at the time of testing; has been officially withdrawn from a regular high school program for at least three months unless granted a waiver by the State Superintendent of Schools; and have attained a minimal score in content areas related to writing skills, social studies, science, literature and the arts, and mathematics.
