The following projects were funded by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS). IMLS is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The mission of IMLS is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.

This project addressed the needs of the adult Hispanic residents by

developing culturally relevant material collections and programs

providing training for library staff in language and cultural competencies that will enable staff to successfully serve the Hispanic library user

implementing an outreach program that will market library services to the Hispanic community through partnerships with community agencies

Bi-lingual materials were purchased and a bi-lingual specialist was hired who facilitated the introduction of library services to the Hispanic population. 4 special programs attracted over 400 customers to the event.

24/7 Self Serve
Carroll County Public Library
DVD vending machine which enables customer to access a DVD whether or not the library is open. This machine automatically indexes the collection by communicating with the library system. The customer merely swipes the card and the DVD which is in his name is presented.
50 Forward
Worcester County Library
The senior population was offered a series of structured programs which included book discussions, lectures, theatrical productions, instructional classes and basic computer literacy training. Home bound seniors received services in the home. Seniors in licensed homes also received services.
Cultural Connections
Howard County Library
This project focused on the service needs of the Chinese and Korean populations in a library district. Through the use of focus groups, customers were able to identify topics such as what books to add to the collection, what programs to support, and what kind of training should staff have to facilitate diverse populations. Using this process, the library was better able to meet the needs of these specific ethnic groups.

Pittsville Station
Wicomico Public Library
Pittsville Station provided a library resource center for students and their families during after school hours. This project was in collaboration with the public school being located on the property of the school. During school hours, teacher can bring students into the resource room for books and computer access.

Boy's Read
Queen Anne's County Free Library
Boy's Read promoted the excitement of recreational reading to boys in grades three to five. It promoted language development and lifelong learning.
