NOTICE REGARDING ASBESTOS IN SCHOOLS
In October 1986, Congress passed the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA). This Act required the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop regulations that pertain to asbestos-containing materials in schools. These regulations, 40 CFR Part 763, Subpart E - Asbestos-Containing Materials in Schools, became effective 10/30/87. These regulations apply to both public and nonpublic schools.
Contact the Asbestos Accreditation & School Assistance Division of the Maryland Department of the Environment in Baltimore at (410) 631-3801 or (800) 633-6101, ext. 3801 for detailed information as to how these regulations apply to your educational program. Staff from that Division can visit your facility and assist you at no cost. Copies of the regulations, required forms for the inspection and management plan, and other printed materials are available from that office.
