WHO: Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, State Superintendent of Schools
WHAT: Dr. Grasmick will welcome Maryland students and teachers being honored at the Maryland Service-Learning Recognition Dinner. During the celebration, 44 Student Service Stars will be recognized for extraordinary contributions to their communities through service-learning; 14 teachers will be inducted as Service-Learning Fellows who promote high-quality service-learning throughout the state; and, two principals of the year will be honored for supporting teachers and serving as leaders in their school system, state, and beyond.
Service-learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Maryland is the first state in the nation to require high school students to engage in service-learning activities as a condition of graduation. Each of the 24 school districts in Maryland implements the service-learning graduation requirement differently, because they tailor the specifics of their program to their local community.
