David Murray, a junior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Prince George’s County, has been selected by Gov. Martin O’Malley as the student member on the board for 2009-2010.
Murray must still go before the Executive Nominations Committee of the General Assembly. If approved, he will take office in July, replacing current student member D. Derek Wu, a student at James M. Bennett High School in Wicomico County.
“I’m proud to appoint David to the State Board of Education, and I’m confident he will represent the students of Maryland in his new capacity,” said Governor O’Malley. “I want to thank Derek for his service to the schools of Maryland and wish him luck in his future endeavors. We’re proud to be home to America’s number one public school system, and working together, we can make Maryland’s schools a global leader.”
State Superintendent of Schools Nancy S. Grasmick said that student leadership has long been a hallmark of Maryland’s schools. “David joins a long line of capable students to serve with us as we continue to move our system forward,” she said.
Murray becomes the second student from Prince George’s County to be named to the State Board in the past three years.
“David will give voice to the students of Prince George’s County public schools, and represent the students of Maryland well,” said Dr. William R. Hite, Jr., Interim Superintendent of Prince George’s County Public Schools. “His selection is a testament to the caliber of students in our schools, and we are extremely proud of him.”
The State Board is a 12-member body appointed by the governor. Regular public members serve staggered four-year terms and may serve two full terms. The student member serves a one-year term. He is selected by the Governor from two nominations provided him by the Maryland Association of Student Councils.
