About BDJA

BDJA opened in 2007 and successfully made Adequate Yearly Progress in its first year of operation. BDJA’s Debate Team placed second and fourth in the Baltimore Urban Debate Competition.

Program Philosophy and Model:

  • BDJA is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) School
  • It prepares young men to pursue rigorous educational opportunities in high schools of their choice and expand their post secondary education options
  • BDJA believes in providing its male students with an intellectually and academically rigorous education

Learning Environment:

  • Two teachers staff each classroom to accommodate differentiated learning and innovative instructional delivery as well as to support effective classroom management
  • Each classroom is equipped with a computer, LCD projects, and smart boards
  • An on-site laboratory reinforces the STEM approach and allows students to engage in science experimentation

Student Support Services:

  • Substance abuse prevention sessions are embedded into the schedule through a grant award
  • Students receive support from University of Maryland School of Social Work social workers
  • A school counselor provides academic, social, and behavioral support to students
  • A Student Support Team meets regularly to assess academic and behavioral needs and make recommendations or share strategies with families and teachers prior to and throughout the referral or intervention process
