About City Neighbors Charter School

City Neighbors enters its fourth year of operation. Its charter was recently renewed for a full five-year term. This year, City Neighbor’s has a waiting list of almost 400 students.

Program Philosophy and Model:

  • City Neighbors Charter School’s mission and philosophy is rooted in arts integration and project-based learning and inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy
  • Designed around the small-school model, the school emphasizes progressive education ideals within the context of strong student-teacher-family partnership

Learning Environment:

  • Dominated by student created work, rich with resources, and organized around cooperative, community learning, the classrooms reinforce the school’s philosophy and vision
  • At 22 students per class, with at least two adults in each classroom, we strive to know our students so that we can support them, understand their performance levels and interests, and address their needs
  • With this knowledge, we can support all of our students, understand their performance levels and interest bases, and address their needs

Student Support Programs and Services:

  • City Neighbors is an inclusive school where every student gets what he or she needs in the context of the regular education classroom and with strong partnership between regular educators, special educators, support professionals, and parents
  • On staff we have Special Educators, a social worker, Reading Specialist, and part-time Psychologist, Speech Pathologist, and Occupational Therapist

Partnerships:

  • City Neighbors partners with several organizations in and around Baltimore City
  • It recognizes its partnership with One World Cultural Arts Society as its most in-depth partnership. Through this multicultural, arts-based after school program students have access dance, vocal music, instrumental music, theater, yoga, spoken word, and culinary arts
  • City Neighbors also partners with Oak Crest Retirement Community where residents partner with 2nd and 3rd graders as reading buddies.
