About MATHS

Opened in 2006, MATHS was profiled by Bloomberg School of Public Health as one of 25 ways to improve Baltimore. The school has received numerous awards including Ben Carson scholarships, debate awards, and technology prizes. In 2007, 100 percent of students passed the Algebra High School Assessment.


Program Philosophy and Model:

• MATHS mission is to provide an intellectually rigorous, personalized and supportive college-preparatory education to 6th-12th grade students with an emphasis on the biotechnology, health science, and engineering fields.
• MATHS vision is to provide an education that enables students to establish themselves academically and professionally and as contributors and leaders of their communities.

Learning Environment:

The MATHS model is built on five pillars:

4. College-Prep
5. Science/Technology focus

• MATHS provides a comprehensive college-prep curriculum with fully equipped science labs, computer labs, art/music room etc.
• MATHS emphasizes project-based and problem-based learning to develop higher order thinking and problem-solving skills.
• The biotechnology program is CTE approved by MSDE.

• Ninety-minute classes

• Small class sizes (less than 20 students/class)
• Daily single-gender advisory classes

MATHS partners closely with several area organizations that provide funding, guest speakers, internships, mentorship, and academic enrichment:

• Universities (JHU, Morgan, UMBC, Coppin Nursing)
• Foundations (Abell, Lockhart-Vaughn, Family League, BCF etc)
• Academic Curriculum Projects (Infinity Project, VANTH bioengineering etc)
• Community (Black Professional Men, ROCACP, Parks & People etc)
