About Dr. Rayner Browne Academy:

Dr. Rayner Browne Academy converted to charter school status in 2007.

Program Philosophy and Model:

  • Vision: “The Dr. Rayner Browne learning community will ensure that all students are equipped with the necessary attitudes, skills and proficiencies to soar to higher levels of success in the 21st century”
  • Mission: “To accelerate student progress through effective implementation of the School Improvement Plan, focusing on quality instruction, maintaining an orderly learning environment, and sustaining a culture of excellence”
  • DRBA adopted Direct Instruction (DI), a highly structured, scripted, scientific research based instructional program as a school-wide reform initiative during the 1998-1999 school year.
  • DRBA was identified as a Reading First School during the 2004-2005 school year and adopted the Reading Mastery Plus reading program, an updated scientifically based researched version of the DI Reading Mastery Program that is used in Pre-K through fourth grade.
  • The Core Knowledge Curriculum (CK) addresses the social studies, science, health and literature curriculum areas through daily lesson plans, activities and performance assessments.
  • The needs of the special education students are met in a full inclusion environment. Individual Education Program (IEP) goals and DI assessments drive the placement of students in age and instructionally appropriate groups with their regular education peers.

Student Support Programs and Services:

  • One primary and one intermediate resource teacher monitor and implement IEP goals and accommodations.
  • One full-time art teacher provides art instruction to students; Sports 4 Kids provides physical fitness instruction
  • Additional support staff includes five part-time Special Education Child Study Team (CST) members; the .2 Instructional Associate (IA),.2 Technical Support Paraprofessional (TSP), .5 social worker, .4 speech pathologist, and .2 school psychologist.
  • A Student Support Team meets weekly with classroom teachers, parents to address academic, behavior, attendance concerns.
  • Johns Hopkins Mental Health Clinician provides services to students recommended by SST and/or administrators and wrap around counseling services for families.
  • Child Study Team provides services to students with disabilities.
