About Southwest Baltimore Charter School:

Opened in 2005, SBCS serves a diverse population in southwest Baltimore City. Among SBCS accomplishments include increases in reading performance across all grade levels and student performances at Taste the Arts, a Young Audiences Gala and fundraiser.

Program Philosophy and Model:

The school’s curriculum of integrated thematic units in arts-based setting is designed to:

  • encourage children to use all their senses to construct and retain knowledge
  • allow for in-depth study of a topic from many facets and perspectives
  • promote differentiated instruction and production

Learning Environment:

  • resident artists share their expertise with students of all ages
  • small class sizes with assistants in every room
  • art instruction twice per week with additional projects and activities in the classroom
  • small group reading instruction for all students daily at their own reading instructional level

Student Support Programs and Services:

  • special educator who works inclusively with students with and without IEPs
  • additional reading intervention for individual students who struggle in grades one and two
  • student support coordinator to support children with emotional or behavioral needs in and out of the classroom

Partnerships:

  • partnership with Friends School of Baltimore to bring 8th grade volunteers to work with our students one to one and in small groups
  • St David’s Episcopal church volunteers who read with our kindergarten teachers
  • Young Audiences artists via grant-based residencies
