Maryland Aquatic Resources Education Grants Program

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Chesapeake Conservation Education Unit, recognizes the need to create an understanding and appreciation of Maryland's aquatic resources, which then will lead to responsible action in restoring our natural resources.
The "Maryland Aquatic Resources Education Grants Program" provides financial support for educators to design projects which equip their students to make educated choices concerning the aquatic resources. Projects can be designed for classroom, laboratory, or field experiences. Particular emphasis will be placed on selecting projects which actually improve or enhance Maryland's aquatic resources and those that include student involvement from start to finish.

Through a federally assisted grant reimbursement program funded through Sport Fish Restoration funds and State monies, the program targets and is available to grades K through 12 in public and private schools and school systems throughout the state.

Grants cannot exceed $4,000 for city and county school systems, or $1,000 for each school.
Project proposals must contain any one of the following criteria:

Provide water quality and/or aquatic ecology preservation or enhancement.
Involve fish and/or other aquatic life form identification and conservation.
Promote effective fishery management techniques and an understanding of fisheries regulations.
Include aquatic resources ethics and responsibilities.
Instruct basic boat handling and water safety and/or the proper use of fishing equipment.
Establish lifesaving methods pertaining to the aquatic resources.
Grants will be awarded on the basis of how effectively the proposals address the environment, social science, and/or safety areas involving Maryland's aquatic resources. Projects that are strong in student service learning are encouraged. Projects can be targeted towards a particular geographical area of the state.

Once proposals are reviewed, applicants will be notified whether grant proposals are accepted or denied.

"Service Purchase Order" contracts will be prepared by the Department of Natural Resources outlining the "scope of work" which will be performed by applicants. Once contracts are executed, invoices can be mailed to the Department of Natural Resources for reimbursement to the contractors.

Upon completion of each project, a written report is required for submission to the committee for their evaluation.
