If You Are Not Highly Qualified

What are my options if I am not highly qualified?

I am an early childhood teacher or elementary teacher who earned my Maryland certificate prior to the testing requirement implemented in 1987, and I do not have an Advanced Professional Certificate (APC).

Option 1: Meet requirements for APC
Option 2: Take and pass the Praxis II in Elementary Education (Test #0014)
Option 3: Take and pass the revised Praxis II in ECE when it is developed
Option 4: Complete Maryland’s HOUSSE

I am a teacher who earned Maryland certification through reciprocity with another state that did not require testing as mandated by NCLB.

Option 1: Meet requirements for APC
Option 2: Take and pass the appropriate Praxis II tests in the area of your teaching assignment
Option 3: Complete Maryland’s HOUSSE

I teach a middle school core academic subject, but I hold elementary certification.

Option 1: Take and pass the appropriate Praxis II tests in the area of your teaching assignment
Option 2: Complete Maryland’s HOUSSE
Option 3: For each academic area you teach, complete an academic major or coursework equivalent to a major, a graduate degree, or National Board Certification in the subject area you are teaching

I have an endorsement in a secondary area and teach another content area.

Option 1: Take and pass the appropriate Praxis II tests in the area of your teaching assignment
Option 2: Complete Maryland’s HOUSSE
Option 3: For each academic area you teach, complete an academic major or coursework equivalent to a major, a graduate degree, or National Board Certification in the subject are you are teaching
