Improving Childhood Nutrition

Passed in late 2010, the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act (HHKFA) reshapes school meals and other child nutrition programs to reflect the latest nutrition science. As part of the work required by the HHFKA, on February 1st, the US Department of Agriculture released a proposed rule to regulate all the foods and beverages that may be sold in the school environment during the school day. The rule, the “National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program: Nutrition Standards for All Foods Sold in School as Required by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010,” seeks to bring the foods offered in schools in-line with the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans with the intent to improve the health and well-being of our nation’s students.
