Maryland’s vision is to be a leader in STEM education, preparing and inspiring generations of learners to meet the challenges of the global society through innovation, collaboration, and creative problem solving.

Mission Statement for the Office of STEM Initiatives

The mission of the Maryland State Department of Education’s Office of STEM Initiatives is to provide leadership, support, and resources to Maryland schools that will allow for the design and implementation of an effective STEM program. 

The Office of STEM Initiatives will achieve this mission through the implementation of five goals:

• Develop Maryland State STEM Standards of Practice, lessons, and units. 
• Implement STEM professional development for STEM educators each year until 2014 via the State’s Educator Effectiveness Academies.
• Allocate state funds for the implementation of STEM initiatives in elementary and middle school, particularly focusing on increasing STEM interest and participation of underrepresented populations.
• Collaborate with colleges, universities, government agencies, businesses, and industry partners to develop e-resources for STEM teaching and learning.
• Collaborate with other MSDE departments to promote and sustain STEM Education.
