The Maryland Student Service Alliance (MSSA) and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) will honor students, teachers, principals, and community-based organizations for their leadership in the field of service-learning at Maryland’s Service-Learning Leadership Recognition Reception this evening from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the United States Naval Academy – Officers’ and Faculty Club. Deputy State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. A. Skipp Sanders, will begin the awards ceremony at 5:00 p.m. as he speaks on the impact quality service-learning has on Maryland’s students.
The 44 high school student “Service Stars” will be recognized for the extraordinary contributions they provide their communities through service-learning and for their leadership promoting service among their peers. “These students have gone beyond their district’s service-learning plan, giving hundreds of hours of service to their communities,” said State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick.
Twelve teachers will be inducted as new Service-Learning Fellows for their ability to create exemplary service-learning experiences for their students and provide expertise to their peers. They will join nearly 150 veteran Fellows who represent all 24 Maryland school districts.
Eleven principal leaders will be recognized for their exemplary service-learning leadership efforts. These principals support teachers, ensure program accountability, and promote high quality service-learning. This year’s Service-Learning Principal of the Year, Mr. William Ekey, is a principal at C. Milton Wright High School in Harford County.
