Media Alert: Gifted And Talented Students Work To Improve The Chesapeake Bay's Health At The Honeywell Institute For Ecosystems Education At Horn Point

WHAT:  The Maryland Summer Center/Honeywell Institute for Ecosystems Education at Horn Point will have students working alongside scientists to collect and analyze data pertaining to the management of the Chesapeake Bay’s natural resources. The students will work to improve the Bay’s health and experiment with nutrient levels and phytoplankton growth in the Choptank. Students also will collect data to determine the effects of water quality, estuarine circulation, weather, and human impact on the Bay.

The 2014 Maryland Summer Centers Program continues a 47-year commitment at the State level to provide summer educational opportunities for Maryland’s gifted and talented students. The program, coordinated through the Maryland State Department of Education, in partnership with public and nonpublic agencies, provides Maryland’s diverse gifted and talented student population with advanced, rigorous, experiential learning opportunities that nurture these students’ talents and abilities within unique learning environments.

WHO:  Gifted and Talented students, entering grades 6 – 10, will live and work on the 850-acre campus of Horn Point Environmental Laboratory where they will be given the choice to research submerged aquatic vegetation, rockfish, the Maryland blue crab, the Maryland oyster, and man’s impact on the Bay.
