Emergency Evacuation Workgroup

Overview

In 2017 the Maryland General Assembly enacted House Bill 1061 - Education - Emergency and Evacuation Plans - Individuals with Disabilities.  The legislation requires an update to the State's emergency evacuation policies and procedures to ensure that the needs of persons with disabilities in public school buildings are accommodated. The Maryland Sate Department of Education is convening a workgroup to consult with advocates, the disability community, and school system staff in revising the guidance.  The Department will report its recommendations to the Maryland State Board of Education by December 1, 2017. Maryland local school systems will revise local policies by July 1, 2018.
