All individuals employed as a Professional Public Librarian or Public Library Director are required to hold a Maryland Educator Certificate. To apply, please register in
The Educator Application and Certification Hub (TEACH) and alert your Staff Development Coordinator if you are currently employed.
Professional Public Librarian
To qualify for certification as a Professional Public Librarian, an applicant must have a Master's degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association.
To renew a Public Librarian certificate, the certificate holder must complete 6 semester hours or their equivalent in an accredited institution or in an in-service program in one of the following areas:
- Management and supervision
- Information technology
- Reference or technical services
- Other subjects relevant to the professional assignment of the librarian
Professional Public Library Director
To qualify for certification as a Professional Public Library Director, an applicant must have a Master's degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association and 5 years of experience as a professional librarian with at least 2 years of experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
To renew a Professional Public Library Director certificate, the certificate holder must complete 6 semester hours or their equivalent in an accredited institution or in an in-service program in the following areas:
- Library management
- Administration
- Other subjects relevant to the professional assignment of the Professional Library Director
